Worcestershire entrepreneur creates completely plant-based Scotch Egg
Since then she has launched the line and sells it at foodie events and shops up and down the country
With a passion for sustainability and a background in conservation, travel, and tourism, Rhian’s journey to creating the plant-based twist on a classic favourite was driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the environment.
“That's the reason I began the business: sustainability,” Rhian said. “I have a passion for sustainability and wanted to continue that. So, it's not just about selling plant-based food; the plant-based part of it is very sustainable. I am dedicated to creating delicious plant-based products but also committed to making a positive impact on the world.”
By integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into her business practices, Caffull ensures that Veg Life is not only a delicious choice but also a responsible one. Rhian has an unwavering commitment to ensure that both she and her business plays its part in achieving the Global Goals, a plan agreed to by all world leaders to build a greener, fairer, better world by 2030.
During her time as an expedition leader, taking groups to rural locations in Kenya, Uganda, Galapagos, Borneo and other destinations, Rhian saw first-hand what a positive impact we can make in the world and what sustainable projects can achieve. Upon returning to Malvern from her home in Dubai due to a pandemic redundancy, she set about changing people’s perceptions about plant-based food that transitioned into a profitable start up.
Recognising her outstanding contributions, Caffull has been shortlisted for the Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2023 at The Great British Entrepreneur Awards and her business, Veg Life, has been honoured as Highly Commended in Excellence in Innovation at the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce Awards 2023. Caffull's dedication to sustainability and her commitment to the environment and wildlife have also led her to pioneer plant-based pickled eggs, egg sandwich fillings and pastries adding another unique offering to her repertoire.
The Veg Life Scotch Egg comes in four travel inspired flavours:The OG (Original), Pub Grub (Pickled Onion & Crisps) paying homage to its pub origins, Jambo (East African Curried Spinach) and Taste of the East (Chilli, Garlic, Thai Basil, Mushroom Oyster sauce and Soy Sauce).
These mouth-watering options are now available at Westmoreland services, Gloucester services, Infinity Foods in Brighton, and various independent shops across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Weston, Wales and Bristol as well as offering direct to consumer options in the online shop.
“What we consume, is the single biggest impact we as individuals can make.” Rhian says. Her invention does not compromise whilst resembling its traditional counterpart in appearance, texture and taste but offering a much more sustainable option.”
Remarkably, these scotch eggs contain the same amount of protein as their traditional counterparts but with 5th fewer calories and 7 grams less fat. Furthermore, they are free from cholesterol, hormones, and any harmful additives.
As COP 28 draws to a close Veg Life founder Rhian Caffull stands as a shining example of how individuals can make a difference through sustainable entrepreneurship.

About The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In 2015, World Leaders agreed to 17 global goals. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. The global goals recognise that ending poverty goes hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. They are a plan agreed to by all world leaders to build a greener, fairer, better world by 2030, and we all have a role in achieving them.
